The Victoria Day long weekend is about to begin...

Campers and outdoor lovers in the Peace Region are being reminded to plan ahead, follow fire restrictions, and stay alert as wildfire risk rises across B.C.

The May long weekend usually kicks off camping season, but dry weather and below‑average rainfall have already led to more wildfire activity.

As of May 14, there are 36 active wildfires in the province, nine of which are out of control. Category 2 and 3 open fire bans are in place in much of B.C., including parts of the Prince George Fire Centre, though most of the Peace Region isn’t affected yet.

People are encouraged to check local restrictions before starting any fires, as conditions can change quickly, and to be extra cautious since most wildfires at this time of year are preventable.

Avoiding fires during windy conditions, using established fire pits, keeping flames at least three metres from trees or structures, and never leaving a campfire unattended, are responsible preventative measures.

People travelling or camping for the long weekend are encouraged to stay up to date on wildfire activity, road conditions, and any evacuation alerts or orders in their area.

The BC Wildfire Service mobile app allows users to track current fires, check restrictions, view weather conditions, and report new wildfires with photos. Fires can also be reported by dialing *5555 on a cellphone.
