Upgrades to district campgrounds and parks this year are being supported by a $50,000 grant from BC Hydro.
The D.A. Thomas Recreation Area, part of BC Hydro’s Site C community investment program under the Site C Clean Energy Project, is owned and maintained by BC Hydro and sits on the traditional territory of Treaty 8 First Nations.
According to Matt Wilson, Senior Vice President of Safety at BC Hydro, the new site is all about creating lasting community access to the outdoors for today and the future.
This seasonal waterfront spot features picnic areas, an information shelter, and a walking trail along part of the 2.6‑kilometre shoreline berm, offering scenic views of the reservoir and surrounding landscape.
A gangway and floating dock for small craft will be added later. Wilson says that through regular upkeep, strong safety measures, and environmental care, BC Hydro is ensuring this and other Peace Region sites remain welcoming places for people to connect with nature and each other.
The D.A. Thomas Recreation Area’s opening lines up with the seasonal reopening of other Hudson’s Hope attractions ahead of the May long weekend.
The W.A.C. Bennett Dam Visitor Centre opens May 16, with the Dinosaur Boat Launch, local campgrounds, parks, and the Visitor Centre also starting their season.
BC Hydro is preparing to open public access points along the Site C reservoir with a focus on safety, and boat launches, including new ones at Halfway River, Lynx Creek, and the D.A. Thomas Recreation Area, are expected to open in early summer.
