The father of 12-year-old Maya Gebala, who was seriously injured in the Tumbler Ridge mass shootings, says her surgery to repair a damaged skull was a success.

In a Facebook post, David Gebala shared that Maya underwent a cranioplasty, and there are now no visible signs of the infection that had slowed her recovery.

Maya was shot three times during the Feb. 10 attack in the remote northeastern B.C. community, which claimed eight lives.

“Your sweet face has its color back, and that sparkle in your eyes says it all. It’s been 24 hours since your EVD was removed and 72 hours since it was clamped.

We’re moving in the right direction after your cranioplasty. The incisions are healing beautifully,” David wrote.

Maya’s mother, Cia Edmonds, shared that the surgery would be her fifth and, hopefully, her last.

Her father posted on Facebook, “My beautiful baby girl, look how far you’ve come. So many milestones in such a short time. They told us it would be two steps forward and one step back, but now you’re shining brighter than ever.”

Maya’s father also said, “Even the neurosurgeons mentioned this morning how wonderful you look and how impressed they are with your progress.”
