Yukon issues flood watch as ice breaks up along Klondike River near Dawson City

Flooding has closed a stretch of the Alaska Highway from Beaver Creek to the U.S. border.

It spans about 33 kilometres between kilometre markers 1,870 and 1,903.

A flood watch reports the Klondike River is open from Rock Creek to Dawson City, though ice jams and sheets remain upstream.

One jam near Henderson Corner is causing backwater flooding and could move downstream, but it’s not expected to reform below Rock Creek once released.

Water levels may rise temporarily, but significant flooding isn’t likely. Lower-level ice advisories remain in place for the lower Yukon River and for the Nordenskiold River near Carmacks.
