On January 24th, the emergency room at Chetwynd General Hospital was closed from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. due to staffing challenges, according to a Facebook post by Northern Health.
Anyone needing urgent care during that time was advised to call 911.
This happened just days after Northern Health launched a webpage to track the status of emergency departments in northern B.C., though the site doesn’t provide historical data, making it unclear when it was updated with the closure.
The page warns that service interruptions can occur with little notice and may be posted late, and it directs people to check their local NH Facebook group.
However, the Facebook update for this closure wasn’t posted until 3:41 p.m.—over an hour after it began and less than 20 minutes before it ended. In 2025, emergency rooms across northeast B.C. were closed for more than 600 hours in total.
