Northern BC is getting some help in fighting organized crime and drug trafficking. The Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of British Columbia is launching the North District Uniform Gang Enforcement Team.
The team has been formed in an attempt to disrupt gang activity and support law enforcement across the northern part of the province.
Police say organized crime groups continue to expand drug-trafficking routes and move weapons through Northern BC, increasingly targeting remote and rural communities.
“North District UGET strengthens our efforts in Northern B.C. by expanding our ability to target violent offenders, seize drugs and weapons, and help disrupt gang activity through proven, intelligence-led enforcement,” said Sgt. Sarbjit K. Sangha.
The specialized unit will target violent offenders and gang associates. Based in Prince George, ND-UGET will patrol rural and remote communities, and supplement the work of local police with investigations into gang and organized-crime activities.
“I want to thank the CFSEU-BC for their leadership and relentless efforts as they expand the UGET initiative into the North, working with partners to address regional challenges and improve public safety for northern communities,” said Nina Krieger, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General.
The team is looking to hire 8 new police officers starting in the new year.
The Peace Region has seen 12 murders in the last 4 years that are being associated with the drug trade and organized crime.
