The City of Dawson Creek is moving forward with its short-term emergency plan to address the ongoing drought that affects the city’s water supply.
The city will transfer water overland from the Peace River to its reservoir using temporary hoses along highway corridors.
“The City Team has been working hard to finalize our emergency operations plan,” officials said.
The team has applied for short-term water use application, after declaring a State of Locale Emergency in October.
This project is supported by the province and prepares the city in case the Kiskatinaw River freezes.
The city said with the recent snowfall, river flows have improved.
“While this provides short-term stability, the Kiskatinaw River is already beginning to freeze and the water level is much lower than previous years,” the city said.
Pumping operations are expected to begin at the start of next year.
“It is essential to continue advancing both emergency and long term water solutions,” officials added.
Dawson Creek has implemented Stage 3 Water Conservation measures since early September.
