The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) says both sides have agreed on the main points of new deals, and rotating strikes are on hold while they finalize contract language.
CUPW noted they still reserve the right to strike, and Canada Post confirmed a tentative agreement is in place pending a union vote. All strike or lockout actions are paused for now, but if they can’t settle the wording, a walkout could return just before the busy holiday season.
The dispute has been years in the making, with the union pushing for better pay and job security, and Canada Post seeking changes to fix its struggling operations.
The nationwide strike began in late September after the federal government announced big changes to the Crown corporation, like ending home delivery for four million addresses and lifting a ban on closing nearly 4,000 rural post offices.
The deal comes as Canada Post reports its biggest quarterly loss ever, with the labour clash adding to long-standing business challenges.
