CHETWYND, B.C. — A man was taken to hospital after a tense police standoff in Chetwynd on Friday evening that began when officers attended a home as part of a forcible confinement and assault investigation.
According to Kris Clark, senior media relations officer with the RCMP, officers were called to a residence on 53rd Street SW at about 4 p.m. on Friday, August 21.
Police were investigating a reported forcible confinement and assault, and had confirmed the victim was safe and no longer with the suspect before they arrived.
Mounties said a man outside the residence briefly interacted with officers before running into the home.
The area around the property was then secured over concerns the man had access to a firearm.
RCMP negotiators made multiple attempts to communicate with the suspect, with assistance from the North District Crisis Negotiation Team.
As the situation continued, members of the North District Emergency Response Team (ERT) were deployed to the scene.
Police said escalating safety concerns led ERT officers to deploy tear gas into the residence at approximately 8:25 p.m.
Shortly afterward, the suspect, who had barricaded himself inside a room, jumped from a window.
He was transported to hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening and has since been released.
The investigation remains ongoing. RCMP say charges have not yet been laid and are pending further investigation, as well as assessment and approval by the BC Prosecution Service.
No additional details about the suspect or the victim have been released.
