Dawson Creek is moving ahead with its Water Supply System Project to secure a more reliable long-term water source.

An update to city council on Monday showed key progress in Phase 1, with staff exploring new sources like the Peace, Pine, and Murray rivers, where water sampling is underway.

The city, which currently relies solely on the Kiskatinaw, has completed 25- and 50-year population growth and water demand forecasts, and is mapping potential pipeline routes and intake locations while consulting Indigenous communities and stakeholders.

Hansen and South Dawson reservoirs have been flagged as possible discharge sites, making use of existing infrastructure west of the city.

After improved drought conditions, the city eased back to Stage 1 water restrictions in May, with reservoirs now holding over 170 days of supply.

Still, reliance on a single source leaves Dawson Creek vulnerable.

Early engagement with the BC Environmental Assessment Office in March confirmed the urgent need for a new supply.

Phase 1 is set to wrap up in mid-August, when council will review options and next steps.
