Canfor’s sawmill site in Fort St. John has officially changed hands.
Canfor says it has finalized a deal to sell its shuttered Fort St. John mill site to Rocky Mountain Salvage, nearly two years after announcing the facility’s closure in September 2024.
The agreement includes the entire site, including the sawmill, planer, pellet plant, and energy systems, according to the company.
Mina Laudan with Canfor says the company has been working to divest the property since the closure was first announced.
“Since announcing the closure of the Fort St. John sawmill in September 2024, Canfor has been working to divest the site and assets,” said Laudan.
The buyer is expected to repurpose the site, with Canfor indicating the move could bring some economic benefit back to the region.
“We understand the buyer plans to repurpose the site and provide some economic value to the region,” Laudan added.
Canfor said the transfer of the site should move forward quickly, after an agreement is reached.
The Fort St. John mill was one of several forestry operations impacted by industry challenges in northeast B.C., and its closure marked a significant economic loss for the community at the time.
