Emergency planning rules coming for local governments and regional districts in BC

Starting January 2027, new responsibilities in British Columbia’s Emergency and Disaster Management Act will take effect.

Municipalities and regional districts in Northeast B.C., including the Peace River Regional District, will soon need to step up their emergency preparedness under updated provincial laws.

The changes aim to boost community resilience against disasters like wildfires, floods, and earthquakes.

Local authorities will have to complete emergency‑management plans, business continuity plans, and hazard‑risk assessments, working closely with Indigenous governing bodies in the process.

The legislation, in place since November 2023, recognizes the key role local governments play during emergencies.

The Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness is developing extra support, including guidance to align these plans and assessments with the updated act.

The goal is to make B.C. communities safer and more resilient as extreme weather and climate‑related emergencies become more frequent.
