A wildfire that started near Groundbirch is now being held, according to the B.C. Wildfire Service.

The blaze was discovered Sunday in the Willow Valley area near 267 Road and grew to about two hectares before crews managed to get it under control.

Based on current conditions and the weather forecast, officials expect it to stay within its existing perimeter. The fire is believed to be human-caused, though the exact cause is still under investigation.

It’s one of four wildfires currently burning in Northeast B.C., including an out-of-control one about 70 kilometres southwest of Fort Nelson, which has grown to a hectare and is suspected to have been sparked by lightning.

Crews continue to monitor and respond to fire activity across the region.
