OpenAI CEO sends apology letter to Tumbler Ridge after failing to alert police about shooter

In a letter, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman reflected on February’s tragic mass shooting.

He offered heartfelt condolences to the community. “No one should ever face something like this. I can’t imagine anything worse than losing a child,”  adding that his thoughts remain with the victims, their families, and the people of British Columbia.

Altman apologized for not notifying law enforcement when the shooter, Jesse Van Rootselaar, had his account banned in June, saying that while words can’t undo the harm, acknowledging the loss is important.

He reaffirmed his promise to the mayor and premier to work on preventing future tragedies, stating that OpenAI will continue collaborating with all levels of government to ensure such events never happen again.

Addressing the month-long delay in sending the letter, Altman explained it was out of respect for the community’s grieving process.

The letter came two days after Tumbler Ridge Mayor Darryl Krakowka met with Eby, who noted the police investigation is nearing completion.
