BC Hydro remains confident Site C camp can be repurposed as closure approaches

The Site C worker accommodation camp is set to close March 31, and the future of the facility remains unclear.

“The process to repurpose the camp is moving forward, and we remain confident that as many assets as possible from the site will be repurposed at another location,” said Bob Gammer, Site C community relations manager with BC Hydro, in a statement.

Gammer says many organizations have expressed interest in the 1,700-bed facility but have stepped back from any purchase agreement.

“This is due to how the camp was assembled. For example, the rooms may not suit how an organization plans to house people for its own project or development,” the statement said.

Gammer says the camp is a temporary structure and was built for a specific purpose, adding that the high cost to dissemble and reassemble the camp at another location is beyond what interested parties are willing to pay.

It has been reported the camp could also be demolished and left in a nearby landfill, sparking discussions about waste management and recycling.

Gammer says BC Hydro will continue to explore repurposing opportunities.
