Fort Nelson RCMP say one person died in the accident that closed the Alaska Highway north of the community Tuesday morning.
The crash happened just before 5 am on Highway 97, about an hour outside of Fort Nelson.
Mounties say the accident involved a single semi-truck hauling a flammable material.
The driver of the semi-truck was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say the truck failed to stop at a mandatory brake check near Steamboat Hill.
A witness told police they saw a “fireball” in the distance and heard sounds of explosions. The highway was shut down as a result.
RCMP add first responders could not access the scene until it was secured by the fire department. Once the blaze had been put out, it was confirmed the driver was deceased.
Highway 97 was shut down for most of the day on Tuesday and overnight, but has since reopened.
