The RCMP began investigating a woman’s suspicious death in March 2025.

A man from Chetwynd, Kenneth Albert Wood, appeared in court Thursday in connection with the homicide in the northeast B.C. community.

He’s charged with second-degree murder in the death of Carlene Engellend last March and remains in custody at the Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre, appearing by video.

Wood was expected to decide whether to be tried by a jury or judge, but the case was adjourned to Jan. 20 so the Crown could provide new evidence for the defence to review.

Prosecutors said more serious charges are being considered, with a decision expected at his next appearance.

Engellend was found dead on March 9 after emergency crews responded to a medical distress call. RCMP at the time called the death suspicious, and major crimes took over the case.

Records show Wood was charged in July 2025, though police never publicly announced it.

Chetwynd sits in the Eastern Foothills of the Rockies, about 240 kilometres north of Prince George, B.C.
