The Fort Nelson Aboriginal Friendship Society (FNAFS) and the Aboriginal Housing Management Association (AHMA) are excited to announce a meaningful project that will benefit the Fort Nelson community while reflecting a shared dedication to safe, sustainable, and culturally respectful housing.

As a member of AHMA, FNAFS has served the Fort Nelson community for over 50 years. Their property at 4903 Sunset Drive is set to be redeveloped into 23 homes with improved accessibility, offering inclusive one and two-bedroom units.

The new building will be called Linda’s Friendship Lodge, named by the FNAFS Board in honour of Executive Director Linda Ashdown’s 30 years of service as she nears retirement. This For Indigenous, By Indigenous (FIBI) project means the team, housing society, and funder are all Indigenous-led.

Construction is planned for spring 2026, creating a 4-storey wood-frame building with shared indoor spaces to encourage connection and everyday community life. Completion is expected in 2027, providing modern, safe, accessible, and affordable homes, mainly for seniors, with priority for seniors and low-income households. Some market rentals will also be available to maintain long-term sustainability.

“This funding is more than financial support—it’s a commitment to inclusion and to uplifting the local economy, our culture, and our community,” said Linda Ashdown, FNAFS Executive Director. “It represents a new way forward, where housing is rooted in Indigenous values and local voices. A funding agreement that honours our culture and language ensures our people are truly seen and heard in how we build and care for our community.”
