Cold, snowy stretch sets the stage for a white Christmas...

Cold temperatures have gripped the Peace Region and Northern Rockies for 10 days as of Monday, with Environment Canada calling this year one to remember.

Meteorologist Brian Proctor said daytime temperatures dipped below -10°C starting December 5, much colder than the seasonal highs of -8°C and lows of -16°C.

An Arctic air mass has settled over the region, blocking Pacific storms and bringing repeated snowfall, along with bitter wind chills.

Proctor warned overnight lows could drop to -40°C or colder by Christmas, but noted the silver lining of a guaranteed white Christmas.

Between December 1 and 14, the area saw over 51 cm of snow—more than double last year’s amount—with totals rising each year since 2021.

While the snow helps Northeast BC’s drought, including Dawson Creek’s water supply, Proctor said it won’t solve long-term issues.

Still, a larger winter snowpack can improve spring agricultural and fire conditions, even if one wet year isn’t enough.
