The RCMP is warning retailers about counterfeit currency possibly circulating in the city of Fort St. John and possibly in Dawson Creek and Fort Nelson.
Police reported that a customer at a local fast-food restaurant tried to pay with a fake $50 bill, apparently made using part of a $5 bill.
This incident is part of a series of recent cases involving fake money. The RCMP says counterfeit bills may appear more often in the coming months, so businesses should be ready.
These fakes often have a transparent strip and maple leaves to look real but are printed on regular paper instead of polymer. Fake $50 bills may use strips from lower-value $5 or $10 bills, and the strip’s denomination should match the bill’s value. Multiple counterfeit bills also tend to share the same serial number since they’re copies of one genuine bill.
Retailers are reminded they can refuse suspected counterfeit money, and anyone who encounters one should contact the Fort St. John RCMP at 250-787-8100.
