A new Indigenous-led housing project will add affordable homes in Fort Nelson.

The Fort Nelson Aboriginal Friendship Society is leading the redevelopment of aging housing units.

“This funding is more than financial support, it’s a commitment to our community, our language and our culture,” said Linda Ashdown, executive director of the Fort Nelson Aboriginal Friendship Society.

The new development will feature modern homes that reflect cultural values and will be designed by Indigenous organizations.

The province said the project reflects a “for Indigenous, by Indigenous” approach.

“Indigenous housing providers have been leading the way in creating safe, culturally grounded homes,” said Christine Boyle, Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs.

The redevelopment being funded through a $29 million investment to the Aboriginal Housing Management Association (AHMA) for a series of projects.

“AHMA members have put all of this capital funding to good work,” said Margaret Pfoh, CEO of AHMA.

Pfoh said the funding has supported community needs and help fight today’s housing crisis demands.

Construction is expected to begin at the beginning of next year.
