Public feedback on a proposed expansion and improvement plan is needed...
The Northern Rockies Regional Municipality (NRRM) is seeking public feedback on a proposed expansion and improvement plan for the Fort Nelson Cemetery to help shape its future development.
Cemeteries serve as vital spaces for honoring local history and remembering loved ones. As the NRRM looks ahead, the proposed expansion aims to introduce a balance of traditional and alternative memorial options, alongside vital infrastructure and aesthetic improvements to the grounds.
Community feedback is a critical step in this process. Resident input will directly inform the final planning and design phases before any decisions are formalized by the municipality.
The preferred concept plan introduces several new features and upgrades, including:
- Diverse Burial Options: Traditional full burial plots, cremation plots, columbarium and memorial wall areas, as well as eco-friendly meadow and forest green burial areas.
- Commemorative Spaces: A hilltop gathering space, areas for reflection, a memorial green space, and dedicated memorial trees and benches.
- Infrastructure Upgrades: Improved access paths, additional parking and turnaround areas, expanded maintenance zones, and essential landscaping and drainage improvements.
The overall concept is designed to provide families with more choices while creating a peaceful, accessible, and welcoming environment for remembrance.
The NRRM encourages all residents to review the proposed concept and share what features and feelings matter most to them and their families.
For more details on the concept plan and to submit your feedback, please visit the municipality's engagement portal or contact the municipal office.
