Alberta visitor loses her vehicle due to excessive speed

A 21-year-old driver from Alberta found out the hard way that BC Highway Patrol is on duty.

Police are on the lookout for speeders everywhere in the province.

Just after 12:45 p.m., a black Chevrolet Trax was pulled over on Highway 97 south of Taylor, BC, after radar clocked it at 142 km/h in a 70 zone.

“Whether you’re visiting or local, it’s your job to know and follow the speed limit,” said Sergeant Michael McLaughlin of BC Highway Patrol, adding that assuming rural roads aren’t patrolled can be a costly mistake.

The woman from Athabasca, Alberta, received a seven-day vehicle impound at her own expense, a $483 ticket for excessive speed under section 148(1) of the BC Motor Vehicle Act, and faces at least three years of high-risk driver premiums, with total costs topping $2,000.

McLaughlin also noted that beyond the money, the inconvenience isn’t worth it. "No one wants to be stranded on the side of a rural highway."
