Former B.C. Liberal cabinet minister Mike Bernier has taken over as leader of the CentreBC party.
This, following founding leader Karin Kirkpatrick’s resignation in June.
A fiscal conservative with socially progressive views, Bernier hopes to appeal to the nearly one million British Columbians who supported Prime Minister Mark Carney’s federal Liberals but lack a provincial political home.
He stood by the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity-inclusive school policies he brought in back in 2016, and criticized healthcare spending as an example of how simply throwing money at an issue doesn’t solve it.
On Indigenous affairs, Bernier supports partnering with First Nations without granting what he calls a veto, a stance reflected in his abstention from the 2019 Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act vote.
With two years before the next election, his focus is on growing the party by recruiting candidates and possibly attracting current MLAs who feel let down by their parties.
