RCMP say the case has been concluded with no evidence of criminal wrongdoing...
Nearly three years after a Dawson Creek man’s death was initially investigated as a homicide has been concluded with no evidence of criminal wrongdoing.
The North District Major Crime Unit has determined that the death of Byron Horne, 37, was not the result of foul play following what police describe as a thorough and extensive investigation.
The investigation began on Nov. 16, 2023, when officers with the Dawson Creek RCMP responded to a report of a sudden death at a home in the 600 block of 106 Avenue at approximately 3 p.m. Police found Horne deceased inside the residence.
Due to circumstances identified during the early stages of the investigation, the death was treated as a homicide and responsibility for the case was transferred to the North District Major Crime Unit.
In a news release issued Friday, investigators said they carefully assessed all available evidence and pursued all investigative avenues before coming to their final conclusion. The unit determined the injuries sustained by Horne were self-inflicted and that no criminal offence had occurred.
“Investigators remained committed to conducting a comprehensive and objective investigation to determine exactly what occurred,” said Cpl. Brett Urano, spokesperson for the B.C. RCMP. “The investigation involved the careful assessment of all available evidence and investigative avenues. As a result, investigators determined that Mr. Horne’s death was not a homicide and that no criminal offence had occurred.”
The conclusion brings an end to an investigation that remained under review by major crime investigators since late 2023. RCMP did not indicate whether any additional information will be released.
