Over 100 firefighters are working to protect subdivisions south of Fort Simpson's main village island.

Home and Outbuildings Lost:

  • One Atco trailer-style home was destroyed in the Nogha Heights area near the Highway 1 Wrigley turn-off.
  • The home was lost on Saturday night, as first reported by the CBC and later confirmed by Chief Kele Antoine of the Łı́ı́dlı̨ı̨ Kų́ę́ First Nation.
  • Some outbuildings in the area have also been lost to the flames.

Current Wildfire Situation:

  • Wildfire FS016 crossed Highway 1 on Friday, moving directly into residential neighborhoods.
  • Firefighters have successfully kept the fire from jumping from house to house.
  • Underground fires are now burning throughout the residential area, creating a difficult challenge for crews.

Evacuation and Emergency Status:

  • Fort Simpson has been under an evacuation order for just over a week.
  • The village renewed its local state of emergency on Sunday.

There is no timeline for residents to return.

Officials warn the fire will remain a challenge for weeks.

Firefighters face a "continual fight" against the wildfire south of the village as the lack of rain provides no suppression to diminishing fire behavior.
Despite intense activity, fire officials report only one primary residence was lost, with active firefighting expected to continue for several days.
