Seniors raise concerns over access to spring COVID-19 boosters

Some seniors say they are struggling to access a spring COVID-19 booster shot.

They say some local pharmacies do not have the vaccine and are directing them to Dawson Creek.

Immuno-compromised seniors say the booster is recommended by the province, and they believe the health-care system needs to do a better job ensuring it is available locally.

Northern Health says vaccines remain accessible in the region, but may require booking through other channels.

“Residents can call the Get Vaccinated Support line to get help booking a vaccination appointment at the nearest available location, including the local public health unit and local pharmacies,” said Northern Health Communications Advisor, Arthur Williams.

The health authority adds it is working with pharmacies that may be experiencing supply shortages and can provide short-term vaccine supply where needed.

Northern Health says vaccinations are also available at public health clinics, including the Dawson Creek Health Unit, which offers COVID-19 vaccines for people aged six months and older.

Residents can book an appointment by calling the provincial Get Vaccinated line at 1-833-838-2323.

Despite those options, some seniors say having to travel outside their community for a recommended booster remains a barrier, particularly for those who are immunocompromised and at higher risk.
