Temporary road into Old Fort expected to reopen Thursday after significant progress

Old Fort residents may soon regain access to their community as crews work on a temporary road.

According to the Ministry of Transportation and Transit, Old Fort Road could reopen to vehicles on Tuesday if progress stays on track.

Significant headway was made over the long weekend, moving the project closer to completion.

The job involves laying matting over areas affected by slide debris, installing culverts, and placing gravel.

This week, crews will spread and compact the surface to create a smooth drive for passenger vehicles.

The ministry reports the slide mass is still stable with no movement, and although rain is in the forecast, it’s not expected to slow progress if it stays light.

The Peace River Regional District announced Tuesday that reopening will be a big step for residents who’ve been unable to reach their homes for weeks. Emergency Support Services (ESS) have been extended for three more days for those affected by the Old Fort evacuation order.

Current ESS recipients must renew their file in person on Wednesday at the Pomeroy Sport Centre, with sessions from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Officials say renewals must happen that day to keep receiving support. More updates are expected soon, and residents are advised to follow official announcements before trying to return.
