A legislator from northeastern British Columbia says many residents near a recent landslide site never got emergency alerts from the provincial government.

The slide on Old Fort Road, about five kilometres south of Fort St. John, prompted an evacuation order earlier this week and cut off road access to Old Fort. Independent MLA Jordan Kealy says numerous locals reported not receiving cellphone notifications, calling it “completely wrong” and alerting the province.

The Peace River Regional District says parts of the road have been destroyed, leaving no safe way in or out.

Those unable to leave Monday night were told to shelter and conserve supplies as emergency crews can’t reach them.

Around 70 people have evacuated, while some remain, recalling a similar 2018 slide.

Officials report a section of road has shifted 48 metres downslope, with debris, cracks, and pooling water making conditions unstable and unpredictable.

The Transportation Ministry is monitoring the slide and says it will restore access once it’s safe.
