Sources say shots were fired at a school.
The RCMP has issued an emergency alert for residents of Tumbler Ridge and the surrounding area, after reports of an active shooter at a school.
“Those in Tumbler Ridge area are asked to stay inside and shelter in place, lock your doors and refrain from leaving your home or business at this time,” the RCMP said.
Police are describing the suspect as a female in a dress with brown hair. Mounties say to not attend school unless directed, and to not approach the shooter in any situation.
Police sources say that every available police officer in the region is on the way to Tumbler Ridge.
School District 59 is asking parents be patient as it works with the RCMP. “The district is aware of a lockdown and secure and hold at Tumbler Ridge Secondary and Tumbler Ridge Elementary schools,” the district said.
CJDC-TV News spoke to Mayor Darryl Krakowka. He says at least one business he knows of has closed for the day.
The mayor has yet to speak to the RCMP. At this point, it’s unclear if there are any injuries.
Mounties are asking the public to report anything suspicious to the police. The alert was issued at 3:15 pm on Tuesday.
