Northern Rockies issue's warning about feeding wildlife...

The Northern Rockies Regional Municipality is urging residents to refrain from feeding deer.

Recent aerial surveys have confirmed that food attractants placed in our community are attracting the deer and keeping them inside the immediate community. While deer may be beautiful to watch, feeding them puts people, pets, and the animals themselves at risk.

Feeding wildlife also changes natural behaviour, making animals dependent on humans and increasing the chance they will need to be relocated or euthanized.

We are also seeing a growing number of elk near agricultural lands around the community. This creates real challenges for local farmers, impacts crops and livestock, and affects food security and food sovereignty in our region. Supporting responsible wildlife practices helps protect both wildlife and our agricultural community.

Feeding wildlife is illegal and may result in fines or enforcement action: NRRM Garbage Disposal & Wildlife Attractants Bylaw

Report poorly managed wildlife attractants (compost, plants, garbage, recycling) to NRRM Bylaw Services P:250-774-2541 ext 2059 or bylaws@northernrockies.ca

Report wildlife encounters where public safety is at risk to the BC Conservation Officer Service (COS) RAPP line at 1.877.952.

In an imminent and life-threatening emergency, call the Northern Rockies RCMP
