Canada Day celebrations will look different this year in Fort St. John. The city is introducing a new drone show to replace traditional Canada Day fireworks.
Council approved the change at its latest meeting. The decision comes after Fireworks were cancelled for many years due to fire restrictions.
City staff said the drone show will be hosted at 11 pm on June 30, the night before Canada Day. Staff explained the show must be happening in dark conditions for the best result.
Canada Day falls on a Wednesday, meaning many residents may have to work the following day.
Hosting the show on June 30 is expected to increase attendance, as families can sleep in the next morning before heading to the Canada day Parade. The change also spreads the celebrations over two days.
Staff add that a drone show is appealing because it can be combined with other activities and held in a park.
The drone show fits within the 2026 Canada Day budget and is also expected to be cheaper to host on June 30.
The city acknowledges some residents may be disappointed to see fireworks go, but believes a drone show is a great replacement.
