British Columbia Conservation Officers have caught a second grizzly bear near the 4 Mile subdivision, where a recent incident occurred.
The bear is being immobilized for a health check and to collect DNA samples, which will be compared with evidence like tracks, hair, and clothing fibers from the scene to see if it matches the bear involved in the attack.
Earlier, a bear trapped on Monday was ruled out as the culprit and will be fitted with a GPS collar before being relocated.
Investigators believe a sow and her two cubs are likely responsible for the November 20 attack.
Officials say the attack was “unusual,” as it’s rare for a bear to show such aggression toward a large group—about 20 students and teachers.
Residents are warned that the aggressive bears remain a serious threat and should stay indoors and avoid the area while the search continues. The RCMP is helping with helicopters using thermal imaging and trail cameras.
Meanwhile, the Nuxalk Nation has launched an online fundraiser to support the injured students and teacher’s families, asking for privacy during recovery.
