Conservative’ label on ballots in next Fort St. John election?

With the next municipal elections in BC less than a year away, voters in Fort St. John might have more to think about when picking candidates.

Conservatives in the province are aiming to bring party politics into city councils, allowing local candidates to register as “conservative” through the Conservative Electors Association.

The party is already registered in 15 communities and waiting for approval in over 20 more.

According to chair Kerry-Lynne Findlay, their candidates stand for common sense, conservative values, careful spending, lower taxes, and a focus on safety and basic services, with mentorship and campaign support offered to those who qualify.

Accepted candidates would have their conservative affiliation shown on the ballot. Findlay says this brings clarity to where candidates stand, but Peace River North MLA Jordan Kealy warns it could inject partisanship into a system meant to be nonpartisan, creating tension between municipalities and the provincial government.

Political scientist Hamish Telford notes that while differences can cause friction, politicians are still expected to work together across levels of government. The Conservative Electors Association is expected to continue expanding its reach.
